On Sept. 8, 2021, The Swiss carbon capture company, Climeworks, launched their new direct air capture (DCC) plant, Orca, in Iceland. Climeworks and its Icelandic partner Carbfix hosted the launch event. "Orca" comes from the Icelandic word for "energy." Orca combines Climeworks' innovative DCC technology with the CO2 storage ability and operation provided by Carbfix, which can process 4000 tons of CO₂ annually and is the largest DCC facility.
In Aug. 2020, Climeworks signed an agreement with Carbfix and ON Power in Iceland. Carbfix is a carbon storage pioneer that can safely store the captured CO2 underground. ON Power can provide the energy required by the DCC process with renewable geothermal power. In Dec. 2020, Climeworks started Orca's two phases construction process, which took six months. Climeworks mounted orca's first collector containers in Jan 2021 and finished all eight collectors' installations in Mar 2021. Then, Climeworks completed all outside installations, piping connection, and process installations.
